On a Saturday in the very beginning of Fall of 2008, a player who would later go on to create arguably the greatest Sauerbraten map of all time had a simple idea.
At the time there were plenty of Sauerbraten channels, but they were all for individual clans. Everyone was spread out. There needed to be, he thought, a channel where you could go and talk to everyone. A channel for all the clans.
Thus, #sauer-clans was born. It quickly became the place where Sauerbraten players gathered to hang out, get to know one another, welcome new players, and build up the community. SATAN!!!, its founder, guided it through the early times, making huge contributions to the culture of Sauerbraten as well as the game itself – he is the author of Reissen. Before long, his idea turned into the largest IRC channel in Sauerbraten.
Sauerbraten has changed and grown a great deal since that evening in September. Today, #sauercom carries the banner of the community channel. I’ve decided to close #sauer-clans – it has served its purpose, and it’s time to say goodbye.
So much happened over its 6 years of history. Three Sauerbraten releases. A peak user count of more than 90. New clans forming, rising to prominence, disbanding. Players coming and going. Old friends, including SATAN!!!, moving on. New friends making their way in.
There are a lot of memories there for me. Years of jokes, friendships, stories… I got to watch many of those early players grow up in #sauer-clans. We had the funlog, we had voice contests, we had VR1 hunts, we had pick-up games, we had pranks. Lots of great memories.
It was a great place, and I thank everyone who was a part of it for making it special. I hope to see you all in #sauercom.
P.P.S. I have logs from the channel going back to the day it was founded, if anyone is interested.
