Q&A #3 – What’s the meaning of your nickname and why did you choose it?

Before you enjoy this post though, take a look at our Frag Evening project and vote for your preferred day of the week here!

Back to our Q&A! This week we asked several players about the story behind their nicknames.

swatllama: Noob2 and I were brainstorming ideas for the best animals that would be used for war. We decided on a bipedal llama in full S.W.A.T. weapons and body armor would make the ultimate animal soldier.

Frosty: Ok so actually ill start my little explanation with my original name “afroninja” that name meant alot because it was i like ninjas (you’ll see it in my playstyle!) and i always wish a could rock an afro, but that sounded cooler when i was 12 so i decided i needed a change… So being from canada being such a cold place and all, i had to come up with a name to rep my country in a way that all can understand, but also in a way that it doesnt appear that im some cold-hearted guy. But everyone knows the snowman is full of love and he always has a happy face! So in a long story short, it means I am a cool and happy guy. =]

Fatality: I was playing Call of Duty and saw this name, and as a very dark person, this name that had to do with death sounded awesome to me. In hindsight it was a terrible choice as i get asked twice a month if i am “the real” fatality :D

BaBoo: When I was younger, my father called me babu, which is supposed to mean “first son” in hindi. Since it was time for me to have an original nickname (after using lemon for a few weeks), I wrote it like I thought it was spelled (baboo) and added some upper case letters.

notas: ‘Notasianohwell’ because i thought video games were only for asians :-). Then i shortened it to notas eventually, which means money in portugese so thats cool.

Honzik1: My first name is Jan. Honza is unofficial frequently used synonimum for this first name. Honza comes from the german name Hans and the diminutive form of this name is Honzik in Czech language. In order that I distinguish from the usual Honzik, I added the number 1 to the name Honzik. In fact when I tried to create my first website domain (3rd level domain),  honzik.something.cz was already in use, so I had to choose honzik1.something.cz.

Obstriegel: Obstriegel [oːpstˈʀiːɡl̩] is not a bad or agressive German word as some native English speakers suspected already. It means fruit bar. When I started playing multiplayer-games back in 1999 I was playing with my neighbour the latest games all the time. We put our pocket money together to pay the 56k-dialup and started brainstorming about our nicknames: Obstriegel is what I liked most. Then friends started calling me obst or Obstriegel and 15 years later I still keep this nick because that’s just me :).

Hugohase: The genesis of “hugohase”: It was a cold winter in 2007, I visited a history lesson in school and scrolled my schoolbook. On the 1349th page of that book  I read something about a politician (NOT A NAZI) called “Hugo Haase” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugo_Haase). I just put the words together and deleted one “a” and here we go, from that day I was “hugohase” in online games and stuff.

degrave: Actually degrave means the opposite of  “grave”, so something like immortal. When i started playing sauer there was some chinese animation serie about a guy, named  “Beyond The Grave”,  so i decided to play with that nick.

    1. Alebrije

Alebrijes (Spanish pronunciation: [aleˈβɾixes]) are brightly colored Oaxacan-Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures. The first alebrijes, along with use of the term, originated with Pedro Linares. In the 1930s, Linares fell very ill and while he was in bed, unconscious, Linares dreamt of a strange place resembling a forest. There, he saw trees, animals, rocks, clouds that suddenly turned into something strange, some kind of animals, but, unknown animals. He saw a donkey with butterfly wings, a rooster with bull horns, a lion with an eagle head, and all of them were shouting one word, “Alebrijes”. Upon recovery, he began recreating the creatures he saw in cardboard and paper mache and called them Alebrijes.

  1. C.O.O.K.I.E!!

When I started playing sauer with my brother, we decided to play as cookie and milk. This didn’t really set us apart, so we changed it to C.O.O.K.I.E!! and M.I.L.K!! As for my alias SeñorLaFesj – it sounded cool :D

  2. pix

    – pix is Latin for pitch
    – pitch in English translates to Pech in German
    – Pech in German has two meanings: 1. pitch (obviously), 2. bad luck

  3. bandandit

Years ago, just before I began playing sauer, I worked at an awesome west-coast styled mexican restaurant. I worked as a line cook and we would get so many orders during dinner service that we had to work feverishly to keep up. Because of this I would start sweating really bad so I used to tie a bandana around my arm to wipe off sweat. Because I was kind of a hipster at the time I started wearing it all the time. One day during a busy dinner rush my boss came up and saw how quickly I was putting out orders that he called me a “bandit” on the line. A “bandana bandit” as a matter of fact. Since then I’ve kept the name but shortened each word and combined it to “bandandit.”

  4. Fear

Back in the days i used to play F.E.A.R. That was one of the reasons why i have chosen F.E.A.R as my nickname when i started my sauercareer. On the other hand it was tchen, who inspired me to choose this name, since he fears my middlefinger that much. Tchen: “His 13cm middle finger isn’t just a treat on the battle field”

  5. Vanquish

Around the time that I was searching for a permanent nickname for myself, I saw a facebook ad telling me to “test drive an Aston Martin Vanquish today!”.
The car looked pretty fabulous so I remembered the name and well….yeah.

  6. mr.pink

My nick stems from the German stoner movie Lammbock. The original dialogue translated into English goes more or less like this:

Kai is walking into an HIV test center, having contemplated night and days before about the alias he has to provide in order to get the results from the test. In the end, he settled on mr.pink, because of Reservoir Dogs.

Nurse at the HIV test center: “Can you give me an alias?”
    Kai: “Mister pink”
Nurse: “Only one name is allowed”
Kai (very irritated): “Well, then pink”
Nurse: “In this case, I assume I don’t have to ask for your sexual preferences”

    1. Nighty

So I saw hades playing the game with his computer one day, I was still an 8th at the time so i had no computer. Lame as I was at the time, I started brainstorming names i could use. I first began on venice as the deadly “NightMare” which i kept for a while until i was accepted into [FD]. I thought the name was too long and geeky so i shortened it down to Nighty.

  8. Agalloch

borrowed from Greek agálachon, agállochon (Dioscorides), borrowed by uncertain mediation from an Indo-Aryan source akin to Sanskrit aguruḥ, agaruḥ, probably borrowed from a Dravidian source (whence Tamil & Malayalam akil, name for Aquilaria malaccensis)
    First Known Use: 1653

Fuck it, its an amazing metal band. In the past it was CorpseDady(SVK). I like movie CorpseBride. So i changed bride for dady (yea without 2d because no space anymore) and SVK as my country.
