Flashback Friday: The Asylum Affair

Back in 2009, a new player named Asylum from France was an up and coming insta 1v1 superstar. Within a few months he was able to ascend to become one of the top insta players, facing tenshi in the insta 1v1 finals in September 2009 but getting beat up quite badly (aard3cturbine).

Despite the fact that most clans had already branded him as a cheater, he kept practising unremittingly and October should prove to be his month. Winning the PSL title both in insta 1v1 vs tenshi (aard3cturbine) and ictf 3v3 vs }TC{ (dust2frostbytecampo) with his team French Kiss, he stirred up even more debates.

Shortly after, PSL organizer shmutzwurst banned Asylum from participating in future events on the grounds that the PSL anticheat client had collected enough evidence of wallhacking. This sparked major controversy as they allegedly could not provide aforementioned incriminating evidence due to security reasons. In order for everyone to understand the decision, shmutz uploaded a video showing Asylum’s purported wallhack gameplay.

Unfortunately the infamous video has since been removed, however during this time longtime player Honzik1 made his own rendition, defending Asylum against shmutz’ allegations. Fortunately, Honzik1’s video still remains on youtube and we are able to show you this rare footage. For simplicity’s sake (the original footage was split into 6 videos) all of the videos have been strung together and some music has been added for extra effect.

How would you have handled the situation had you been in shmutz’ position?

I was also thinking about extending this “PSL Classics” idea and upload some more top-notch nail-biter matches from the PSL era.

Opinions? Ideas? Suggestions? texreduce maybe to highlight the game better?

a perfect demo = see the same screen than the person who was playing
try approaching the usual settings of the era

While I think the ffa players back then don’t even compare to our current ones, I would love to see some videos of the CTF and Capture finals! I don’t think many people here – including me – really know how to coordinate a team in those, so it’d be awesome to see teams doing that in PSL.

i assume you mean they don’t even compare because of how many leagues better they were? I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt here

Well, Asylum was huge inspiration for me even that he is French, his playing style was unique, how he was switching weapons it was like a signature, he can communicate with you with this wheel switching, when he miss or when he was happy about that shot.

I am one of many who tried two beat him and failed even after he went inactive we played more than 50 duel.. all of them was fun even that i win nothing, he is calm and polite.. never discuss anything else that he is innocent from this accusations.

I mean, just watch his demo with tenshi, you will feel the action.. i don’t believe he cheated.. sometimes the pit throw a legend.. you know?

I’ll just repeat what I said on IRC earlier:

<@Aqrta> accuracies are relatively low because asylum was incredibly hard to hit and both had a very tight style

On top of that, it was a very tense situation, being one of the biggest PSL finals ever. Anyway, you have my word that the two of them would crush any of the current top insta fags.

I had the honor to still see him play for a short time as i started playing sauer and saw that he indeed played hundreds of times better than it looks(!) on aard3c. He was my inspiration for the crazy 180s/360s i bind into my movement today. I then rated him my favourite and best player and i’d comfirm that today excluding efficiency ofc.
He does often shoot the edges of walls and makes it look like he sees through the wall but he is probably just focussed on where the enemy could be.

Players on matches which have been played in the past can’t be compared to those of today.
The engine had annoying camera-shaking (up to switching the axes nearly) when you took any damage, maxroll was default set on 3 (feels like you’re drunk when strafing; fun to mess with but not during play).
The rendering has been optimized also trough all these years, as well as the network-code.

I remember the video of shmutz where the opponent player (as ogro) was rendered in front of the obstacles instead of the pillars on kffa, seen from the aspect of Asylum.
That vid didn’t really prove that he was cheating as it’s not him confessing that he surely is. However, the hits were significantly suspicious.

There have been more like such cheats; like rendering in wireframe mode by default (which makes you also able to look trough walls and even other players).

Nevertheless, I do think he cheated because of suspiciously.

Asylum was nice guy and he played very good and he played mainly for fun. PSL was only 1 tournament that time, so becuase of this accusation after 1-2 months he left Sauerbraten with all his clan about 10-15 french guys……Thanks to Smutz french Sauer community is gone….My videos did not changed Smutz mind about ban…..Only 1 guy who was really wallhacking was Smutz (to be able to record that wallhack stuff).

I will always remember these French Kiss guys ;-)

They told me that they switch to another game….dont remember name now. If you dont believe me, I dont care

Then perhaps the French community leaving the rest of the community would occur later anyway. Just because someone would perhaps been accused false for cheating is quite pathetic to draw a whole group of players in it.

J’étais fort car vous étiez tous nul à chier. Aussi une des raison pour laquelle j’ai quitté le jeu. :)

Didn’t want to post something here, but I’ve seen that you’ve missed something important.

“How would you have handled the situation had you been in shmutz’ position?”

Are you serious? You should pay attention two seconds on the screenshots you’ve posted above.
    D2-FK : Evil
    Frostyte-FK : Evil
    Campo-FK : Good

Figured out? In the whole PSL history, the side used to be A-b-A. This time around, the order was A-A-B. Plus, Frostbyte wasn’t even in the official map pool on the PSL website (and didn’t appear in the game itself, funny right?).

Wake up dude, shmutz is the one that cheated with TC. They purposely picked Frostbyte knowing that we had no idea what the map was, while they were changing us from Evil to, well, Evil (and yes, the map order was D2/FSBT/Campo).
In the whole PSL history, that was the first and last one they did that. And you were asking if I’m the one who cheated and how “we” would have react in shmutz’ position?

    That’s quite funny.

Ofc we wont forget it, pj of 200 in a tournament final, is admin, does not take responsibility – would have been his job to announce a rematch expecially because Honzik came back after frosty fixed his fuckin pj. Your tournament is seriously a joke, just bunch of players who abuse their powers for the sake of their clans. And dont tell me to make suggestions again. I suggestest enough stuff to write a fuckin book about it. Why dont we just boykott that shit as a community? You dont provide more than normal duels or clanwars, and as long as every elementary school party is better organized, there is no reason to participate.

Well I got angry, but that wont change the facts. Actually we were talking about you, not me. And you wont get out just by pointing at me like this.
